As a Stay-At-Home-Mom for the last almost-6 years, I finally decided that it was time that I bring home the bacon.
Literally.
15 pounds worth....
AND
6 packs of hot dogs.
15 packages of cold cuts; turkey, chicken, ham, roast beef
8 packs of Philadelphia cream cheese.
4 packs of sausages and kielbasa.
For a whopping total of $165 and 50 pounds. Which fit perfectly spread out in 2 different bags... frozen in 3 coolers... surrounded by 10 packs of blue ice... arriving here STILL frozen after 24 hours of traveling.
It's not that we can't get most of these things here... it's just that most of these items cost an exorbitant amount of money. One package of 6 slices of turkey costs $15. No kidding. And Philly cream cheese? $10 for 1 block!
Next trip back, we're schlepping a Butterball Turkey. Maybe 2.

Turkey, huh? I suppose they don't sell sides of beef over there, huh? Funny.
Ha! You are sooo my kind of gal!
This post cracked me up. When I first moved to Israel nearly twenty years ago I used to bring over all sorts of not locally available products. My suitcase used to bear a strange resemblance to a grocery cart. My parents actually did bring over a turkey one year! (We were new here and hadn't yet figured out that the only way to get a whole turkey is to special order it.)
Thankfully these days nearly everything you might want is available, even if a bit more expensive. Except Campbell's soups. Still can't get those.
Enjoy your stash :).
That is such a great idea! I would always bring stuff back to England with me like pancake mix & syrup, Kraft mac & cheese, oh the list is so long. Enjoy your goodies!
You crack me up.
To me? This seems perfectly sane and rational. Pork products. I do miss pork products.
Somehow I think the appeal of schlepping two frozen turkeys back with 2 little girls and a little baby is going to lose it's appeal. :-)
Glad you, and all the goodies made it back safe and sound.
That sounds exactly like something I would do.
Wowza! That's a LOT of meat!!
Awesome! I've been on flights in Micronesia where every one has their own cooler. It cracks me up.
PS Amen on the cream cheese! It's like $5 here, but still. Ouch.
You could open a black market grocery store....Nah, they're too good save them for yourselves!!!
I love that you brought all that meat home with you! And there has to be some irony to using the word bacon with the word schlepping :-)
My sister used to do the same thing when she lived in Thailand. :) I used to send her pillows, bedding, blankets and movies....
Tomorrow is the 13th. I'm eagerly awaiting to hear how the dentist goes with Sheridan. Good luck!
Much love from NJ,
Suz

Wow girl... I don't even want to know how many bags you took back.. how many were over weight?
